Welcome to our Foundation Unit!
Our Foundation unit comprises 2 classes with 17 pupils in each who are aged 4 and 5 years old. The teachers are Mrs Clarke who is a very experienced teacher who was a Lancashire Leading Teacher in Literacy and Numeracy and Miss Bannister who has been with the School for 4 years. Miss Edwards, Mrs Stocks and Mrs Smith are talented teaching assistants who support the teaching and learning in Foundation Unit.
We learn in a fun, stimulating and well resourced environment. The setting comprises of a bright, inviting classroom, a creative workshop and a large outside play area with a trim trail. In summer 2007 the Reception class started to design and plant a new garden area, this continues to be developed each year with the help of the children.
What a wonderful start for our new boys and girls who joined Thorn Primary School this September.
We have been looking at People Who Help us in class, school and the wider community. We have
been learning our numbers beyond ten, exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We have just completed
phase two Letters and Sounds and are now beginning to apply the phonemes to reading and spelling
Our exciting Terrific Tuesday afternoon is where we bake, sing and learn new art techniques.
Wednesday afternoon is fun PE day where we have been experimenting with different ways of
travelling and balancing on the floor and apparatus. We are beginning to learn French including
greetings and numbers up to three.
This half term’s topic has been ‘Colour’. We have experimented mixing colours to make new colours and different shades. In literacy, we loved reading Elmer stories and made mosaic Elmers and ‘filled’ Elmer’s patchwork on the computer. We have also learnt how to say the names of colours in French.
On ‘Terrific Tuesday’ we have enjoyed improving our ICT, design and technology and dance skills. In PE we have experimented with different ways of rolling and jumping as part of a ‘magical’ theme.
Our visit to Bacup Hub to watch ‘Peter Pantastic’ was great!. We also had a super time taking part in our Christmas Production ‘The Little Red Robin’.
