Year 1

Hello and welcome to Year 1

We are a happy and friendly class who love to learn.

Our Teachers are Miss Riding and Miss Cowhie and we are supported by a collection of helpful Teaching Assistants.

Reading books go home every day and are expected to be brought back into school every day

We encourage all children to read regularly at home with a grownup and sign the home reading record.

Book bags will be checked and changed weekly. Children will bring home a phonetically decodable reading book, which they should be able to read with some independence alongside a free choice book to enjoy with family. It is very important that the children re-read the same book regularly, as they need to see sounds and words again and again to transfer into their long-term memory.

Children will also bring home homework on a Friday to be returned to school by the following Tuesday. Homework will vary but will always be something that they have practised in the classroom.

PE is currently on a Monday and Thursday and it is expected that a full PE kit is in school.

Our Class Rules

Autumn Term- Brilliant Britain

Our class have worked really hard this term so far.

In our Literacy lessons, the children have really enjoyed reading the Harry the Happy Mouse book and learning all about mice and frogs in our non-fiction unit.

In numeracy, the class have started to develop an understanding of number bonds to 10, length, height and weight, plus being able to compare 2-D and 3-D shapes.

This half term in our topic lessons, we have learnt about the significance of Mary Anning and her fossil discovery in History, explored what natural materials are and used them to design and create our very own fossil tiles made from clay in Art, which were inspired by Wedgwood.

In R.E. we learnt about the different roles people have in society and that God can be represented in many different forms. Finally, in PSHE the children have had opportunities to reflect on the people that are special in their lives and the qualities of a good friend.

The children loved collecting leaves and conkers on their Autumn walks during Seasons Week and then making animals using these materials.

Below are some pictures of things that the children have enjoyed creating this half term in Year 1.

Next half term, we will be learning about the significance of Astronauts Tim Peake and Neil Armstrong in our topic lessons and compare their journeys into space.

Parent's Meeting

This half term, we welcomed our children's parents and guardians into the classroom to do some work surrounding the topics that the children have been working on.

We had a great afternoon with our parents showing them what we have been learning in school during our Peter Rabbit topic.
