Home Learning 27/4/2020
Hi Year 6. I hope you are all keeping well and looking after each other. Don't forget to do some jobs around the house to help out. It has been great to see more of you completing work on Purple Mash and Read Theory this week. I enjoy marking your work and reading your lovely messages. I hope you have enjoyed some of the White Rose maths lessons and the writing work all about magic. So this week, I would like you to work on the following:
Writing Home Learning Read and Respond Units – I have attached a weeks plan of writing activities around the book ‘Wonder’ by R J Palacio - This week is all about the moving story of August Pullman. You will be writing diaries, information pages and poems.
Whether you have read the book before, seen the film or it is new to you, you will enjoy a week of delving into the world of Auggie. You have five sessions linked to the book. ‘In a world where you can be anything, be kind.’
Due to the sensitive nature of the content of this book, it is advised that your parents monitor and support your reading and watching of clips throughout this unit with ongoing discussion.
All the links you need to complete the tasks (e.g. youtube clips and downloads) are on the plan – so you just need to click. When following links online, it is important that your parents monitor that you are remaining on that page only and are keeping safe online.
Reading I have put the next 3 chapters (chapters 3, 4 and 5) of Nightfall on the Somme onto Purple Mash with quizzes and activities all linked. I know lots of you have loved reading these chapters and you have produced some fantastic work linked to this! So keep reading.
Don’t forget there is also Read Theory – Online differentiated comprehensions https://readtheory.org/auth/login
Class Code: G9B8NJY5
Just use the class code, then set up your own user name and password. I know some of you have set up already and are completing challenges and earning points. Well done! If you haven’t set up yet, it’s easy. When first setting your child up on ReadTheory, they will be required to answer a few mixed level multiple choice questions to assess what level of comprehension activities they need, so it is vital that they are not supported with this element of the set up process so that the programme can choose appropriate texts/questions for your child, do tell them not to worry if unsure, the programme is just trying to figure out each individual child! After that, children can access daily comprehension practise where they will earn points for their efforts and successes. Teachers will be able to monitor children's progress online, so keep busy!

You should be on week 2 of home learning which is calculating scale factors. Remember to watch the video lesson that starts with a warm-up activity to practise all your previous learning. After watching the video, there are activities for you to download. I understand many of you will not have a printer. Don’t worry just use pencil and paper and have a go at what you can.
Remember if it is a bit tricky, have a look at an earlier year group. It’s tough learning from home. As long as you are practising your maths, it’s fine.
There are also lots of additional maths activities on this page - just scroll down.
BBC Bitesize have also produced some maths activities online here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons. This week the lessons are addition and subtraction problems, long and short multiplication, factors, multiples and primes, order of operations and challenges on Friday.
Theme: As part of our thematic work (including Geography, History, Science, Music, Art), I recommend you make use of the great resources online at BBC Bitesize https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons If you click on the Year 6 lessons, there are daily activities linked to a different area of the curriculum with videos, games and more to engage and motivate your child. These activities are updated weekly so there will be lots of variety. This week there are History, Geography, Science, RE and Music lessons. I'm sure there will be something you will love.
I have also put new tasks on Purple Mash linked to our theme learning.
Scroll down and there is a great time capsule book, some family science experiments and lots of screen-free tasks you can enjoy. Take a look: I know you’ll love them.
PE: During this time Lancashire have developed a programme of activities and a hub of resources for young people to: Remain active and Move, Access challenges to do individually or as a family, Enjoy being active through play and Learn new skills
The aim is to provide opportunities for young people and families to become or remain active through a timetable of accessible opportunities. Resources, videos, weekly challenges and learning activities will form part of a weekly timetable to ensure you can become or remain active.

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter and have enjoyed lots of chocolate and sunshine!
I hope you and your family are all keeping well and are coping as best you can in these tricky times. I am thinking of you all and miss you lots.
Well done to all of you who have been completing challenges on PurpleMash and SPAG Online. I have really enjoyed seeing and reading all of your great work. I have put more activities on PurpleMash - so keep checking in and sending me your amazing work.
I have put together some learning activities for you to work on and enjoy while the country continues to ‘stay at home’. I know it can be difficult to stay motivated when learning at home so hopefully, you will enjoy the range of different activities. By doing a little bit each day, it will keep all your learning fresh.
Below is a rough timetable to follow. Hopefully it should help with planning your day while you are learning from home.

Spellings: You can use your spelling journals to continue practising previously taught spellings. In the back of your spelling journal, you have a high frequency word list and should be working on the last two columns . I have also added spelling games to PurpleMash (Your log in is on the front of your home-learning files).
Reading: Read Theory – Online differentiated comprehensions https://readtheory.org/auth/login
Class Code: G9B8NJY5
When you've entered the class code, you will be asked to create a user name and password.
When you first join ReadTheory, you will be required to answer a few mixed level multiple choice questions to assess what level of comprehension activities you need, so it is vital that you do this bit yourself so that the programme can choose appropriate texts/questions for you. After that, you can access daily comprehension practise where you will earn points for your efforts and successes. I am looking forward to seeing how you are doing, so keep busy!
Grammar: I have added grammar activities to PurpleMash and SpagOnline (log in is on the front of your home-learning pack). There are also some great grammar activities with a short teacher input on BBC Bitesize https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zncsscw/year-6-lessons/1 (Click the daily boxes labelled ‘English’) . These are being updated weekly so there will be lots of variety to keep you interested and motivated.
Writing: Home Learning Read and Respond Units – I have attached a weeks plan of writing activities around the theme ‘It’s Magic’.
I will attach a new plan onto our class page each week. All the links you need to complete the tasks (e.g. youtube clips and downloads) are on the plan – so you just need to click. You will need to become a member of the LoveReading4Kids community (https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/) but membership is completely free.
For the first week you will enter the ‘Nowhere Emporium’ – a shop with a difference! You will explore this fantastic text and others all themed around the world of magic.
Maths: To enable you to continue your maths learning, I would like you to access home learning maths videos modelled by teachers by accessing the following link and selecting the appropriate year group. If you find your ‘year group’ work too challenging, it is fine to select an earlier year group. Remember, learning from home is completely different than school and there is no pressure to get everything right. It is much better to be able to ‘have a go’ than find something too challenging.

The website provides 4 weeks of maths video lessons which all start with a warm-up activity, revisiting skills practised in previous lessons, therefore it is important that you work through the lessons in the order which they are uploaded in. After watching the video lesson, the website then provides practise activities and answers to download. I understand that not everyone will have a printer to print the resources but, you can do the practice tasks on paper and then open the answers to check how you have done in the same way as you would if printed.
There are also lots of additional maths activities on purple mash and the links on this class page.

Wider Curriculum
Hello and welcome to Year 6.
Year 6 is made up of collection of wonderful children taught by Miss Riding and supported by teaching assistants Mrs Smithies and Mrs Neill.
Year 6 can be a challenging year as the children further develop their resilience, perseverance, teamwork and cooperation, respect and communication, motivation and curiosity, self-confidence and esteem and independence allowing them to reach their SATs goals in preparation for their educational journey ahead at high school.
Your parental support in this journey is invaluable. Your child will be expected to bring their reading book home every day. Regular reading is essential in building a child's reading stamina - how long they can read for maintaining focus and understanding. They could read to you, a sibling or to themselves and they should read a variety of different texts from newspapers to poems. This way they should find something they really love to read.
Your child will also bring home their spelling journal on a Monday and Wednesday to practise the spellings they have been learning in class. You can help them by playing games like hangman or testing them. Children need lots of repetition when learning to spell.
On a Friday, your child will bring home a piece of Maths and/or English homework revising or practising something from class which will be due in the following Tuesday. They will be given clear instructions before leaving school but if they struggle, please write a note in their home-school diary and encourage them to talk to a member of classroom staff. They are also welcome to attend the weekly Year 6 homework club after school on a Monday to complete their homework with adult guidance.
Year 6 have PE on a Tuesday and your child must have a full and proper kit in school for their PE lessons.
We have been digging up the beetroot we planted in the spring. Some of the plants were ENORMOUS and took some pulling! We felt like the children in Year 2 at our Harvest Festival - we pulled, and we pulled and we pulled! At last all our beetroot plants were harvested and we were able to give them to the kitchen to use in our lunches. We hope everyone enjoyed them!
The Bethany Choir
In November we experienced a visit from the Bethany Choir who come from Tanzania. They told us their stories and sang some traditional Tanzanian songs. Some of Year 6 even went to see and listen to them again when they visited a local church.
Birdhouse Designing
This term we designed bird houses in our DT lessons. We decided on the shape, size and materials to use and then we were lucky enough to receive lots of help from Mr Goldsworthy in building them. We used a jigsaw to cut the wood, a drill to make the hole at the front for the birds to enter the house and a hammer and nails to fasten it altogether. Take a look at the photos of our finished designs.
Autumn Term - Festivals of Colour
This term we will be exploring Buddhism including religious festivals, art and the people who follow this religion learning to respect and appreciate the lives of others. In particular we will focus on the geography of Nepal. Watch this space for more updates from our class journalists.
