Year 3 / 4

Welcome to Year 3/4!

We are a happy and friendly class filled with smiley faces taught by Miss Riding and supported by a range of TAs.

Children bring home their reading books every day and bring them back the next day. They are expected to read for about 10 minutes each evening. They can read in lots of different ways including:  to their grown up; taking turns to read a page each with their grown up; independently. Children love reading with and to their adult and your support in this is invaluable. Don't forget to fill in their reading record so they can get their team reading token each week.  The children choose their own book from our exciting range of books in the book corner, including some brand new books. There are also some 'Miss Riding recommends' books linked to our class learning.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, children will bring home their spelling journal to practice their spellings. They will have a task inside to complete. At the front of their spelling journal is a 'spelling menu' that lists the words they will be learning each week.

There are many ways to help your child with their spellings including: rainbow writing; look, write, cover, check; mnemonics; flashcards and games.

PE is on a Monday and Wednesday and children are expected to have a full kit.

On a Wednesday we are lucky enough to have ukulele lessons.

Summer Fun!

We have had some great fun experiences this summer. Sports Day was fantastic and we loved all the races. We also had a super Lego Robotics workshop during STEM week where we got to experiment with new technology.

Jubilee Week May 2022

Year 3/4 have enjoyed celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. We have decorated commemorative plates and made bunting for our street party. Look at the tasty treats baked for 'Great British Bake Off' competition and the creative crowns fit for  Queen.

Ribchester Roman Museum!

We had such a great day at the museum. We got to see and handle lots of artefacts including a real Roman pot that is over 2000 years old. We even got to try on replica Roman  soldier battle wear such as helmets, shields, daggers and armour.

We saw the ruins of the granary and enjoyed a walk by the River Ribble to see the ruins of the Roman baths. Some of us enjoyed pretending we were having an afternoon in the warm tepidarium room of the baths! We even found time to have a play on the park. It was great fun for all and all the children were so polite and a pleasure to take out of school.

Year 3/4 became Roman Soldiers! We took it very seriously as any Roman soldiers that stepped out of line became slaves! We didn't want that!

MERRY CHRISTMAS! We had so much fun playing party games, dancing to Christmas songs and eating tasty party food laugh

The children at Thorn had so much fun taking part in the COLOUR RUN and raising lots of sponsor money! We raced around the Forest School area wearing jazzy shades and got powdered paint thrown all over us laugh

In our DT lessons we have been learning about a balanced diet. We learnt that no food is bad for us, we just need to eat more of the fruit and vegetables and less of the sugary foods. We decided to make a seasonal salad using Autumn fruit and veg. We discovered that at this time of year, not everything is in season in the UK and some fruits and veg are imported. We read the labels on our fruit and veg packs and completed a map to show where in the world our food comes from.
